Acorns on a post-it

When hiking, I like to pick up fallen debris such as acorns and seed pods. I picked these up years ago and I'm guessing they're from a white oak. I checked the internet and had no idea there where so many species of oak trees.

Sugar Jar

There were many recommendations on the internet for the Stillman & Birn Sketchbooks. I bought the 5 ½” x 8 ½” Alpha Series. The paper has a nice tooth and can be erased many times without a problem. It does buckle a bit with heavy use of watercolors.

Red Onion

My Sunday morning ink and watercolor sketch. I enjoy waking up early on the weekend to spend some quiet time sketching. I'll make a cup of tea or coffee, put on meditation music and set up a simple still life to paint. It's a good way to start the day.

Ink and watercolor sketch

I'm trying to do ink and watercolor sketches which I find are more spontaneous then detailed drawings. This is a sketch done on a Canson Sketch pad which is okay for pencil and ink but terrible with watercolor.

Red Stump Teapot

As an oil painter I find working with watercolors a challenge in patience. I must have painted 15 layers of various reds to get this intense color. By the way, this is a great little teapot. It keeps the tea hot, doesn't dribble and the lid is attached.

Morning espresso

I took me 3 hours to draw and paint this "quick sketch". I find I'm drawn to subjects with lots of complicated geometric shapes, reflections and lettering which are not good for quick morning sketches.

I got up early this morning to enjoy my flower garden, the variety of birds at my bird feeder and the peace it brings to me. As is typical of New Jersey suburban living, my neighbor had the same idea except he needed to mow his lawn. Oh well.

My sketching tools

I like the paints in this little box. It's portable and the colors are super concentrated and stay moist.

Avocado sketch

Pen and watercolor sketch. I attempted to write with a Pigma Graphic 1 brush pen (too broad and hard to control). Should have practiced first.

Tomato in a glass

A quick ink and watercolor sketch.
